There are multiple factors to consider throughout the counseling process and in the client-counselor therapeutic relationship. Its imperative for professional counselors to empower client rights, protect confidentiality, appropriate maintain documentation but also display self-awareness in practicing self-care and separating client-counselor values without imposition. Counselors must first be sure they are ready to provide adequate services by demonstrating several professional dispositions. These dispositions are correlated with the code of ethics set by the American Counseling Association. The codes represent the five principles for ethical behavior and decision-making, these principles are autonomy, nonmaleficence, beneficence, justice, and fidelity. Professional counselors integrate these principles in the counseling process to maintain client rights. In promoting client autonomy, counselors are demonstrating respect for the client to allow them to take control of their life and making sure their needs are met through the counseling process.
