Ethical standards and practices were created to protect and regulate the counseling profession (Corey et al., 2014). Counselors must learn how to handle dual relationships, work on multidisciplinary teams, work with supervisors and develop their own thinking regarding ethical situations. Boundary Issues and Dual Relationships Dual relationships can be very complicated and a counselor has multiple things to consider before engaging in a dual relationship. It is said that counselors hold a position of power over their clients that must not be abused (Gonyea, Wright & Earl, 2014). Boundary crossing, which is acceptable, occurs when the counselor changes roles or works outside of the normal process without violating boundaries (Corey et al, 2014). However, a boundary violation occurs when the counselors act outside of the normal process and there is harm to the client (Corey et al, 2014). When considering whether or not to enter into a dual relationship the criteria that should be used are a series of questions. The counselor should ask themselves if the relationship can be avoided, if it is harmful to the client, is it beneficial to the client and can the counselor remain objective?
