Specifica... lly, substance abuse (SA) counselors should be knowledgeable about many different techniques in order to be a competent and effective counselor because they understand that each client will be diverse and may expect or need a different treatment than another person. According to the Office of the Surgeon General (2016) substance use disorders are illnesses that present significant impairments health and a person™s ability to function successfully and have control over the usage. Substance use disorders will also vary in complexity, severity, and duration (Medina, 2015). As always, substance use disorders first line of defense is prevention and early intervention. Being able to recognize and identify signs and symptoms of various substances and behaviors is important because it allows for the correct treatment plan to then be discussed and implemented. The intent of this paper is to discuss two different treatment techniques, the differences between each technique, the reason it is a personal preferred method, and considerations that are important to note.
