Childhood obesity is a problem affecting the lives of families all over the United States, but it is especially troubling across the south, specifically Florida. According to a 2016 National Survey of Childrens Health Florida ranked fourth in the nation for percentage of 10-17 year old who are overweight or obese (Child and Adolescent Health Measurement Initiative, 2019). This disparity continues through other southern states as they also make up the majority of the lowest median household incomes in the nation (United States Census Bureau, 2019). Although the relationship between obesity and income is relatively new, first showing the 1990s, it has continued to grow at alarming rate. The obesity rate in the United States in 2015-2016 was almost 40%, increasing significantly in the years prior. Furthermore, while obesity only increased about one percent in the 25 wealthiest counties, it increased more than ten percent in the 25 poorest (Schneibel, 2019). While these rates are alarming, themselves, the link between obesity and type 2 diabetes further complicates the matter.
