The United States is superior to other countries in multiple aspects, but healthcare is not one of them. The Common Health Fund states there is mandatory health care coverage in Germany that is provided by two systems. The first system is known as the "statutory health insurance (SHI) system," this is a competitive non-profit system that provides nongovernment health funds known as "sickness funds." As of January 2016, there were 118 funds. The second system is the substitutive Private Health Insurance (PHI) that consists of affordable private insurances. These systems combined cover over 240 providers. In comparison to the United States, the Germans must pay a premium for their health insurance and they also receive assistance from their employer. Unlike the United States, pregnant women in Germany do not have to pay for their pregnancy, while their children's benefits are covered through SHI at no additional cost according to Common Health Fund (Common Health Fund, 2017.) Health insurance for those who are retired are also covered under the SHI.
