A daily routine often dictates and allows a person to attain the proper amount of sleep needed to perform at a high functioning level. The internal clock that ticks away within the ever-so intricate psychological mind regulates the amount of sleep needed. What is the sleep drive and how does it affect us? Researchers often describe the sleep drive as a homeostatic system, one which internal conditions, help regulate a healthy condition regardless of any external environmental conditions (Division of Sleep Medicine at Harvard Medical School, 2007). The Drive State of Sleep: What is it and Its Affects on Behavior There are two main stages, with several substages, to the drive state of sleep and various effects that take place with each component. Rapid Eye Movement (REM) Sleep and Non-REM Sleep are connected to the transition from wakefulness to sleep and each have meticulous mechanisms, both physiological and environmental, that allow humans and animals to be active or asleep. Non-REM Sleep is comprised of three smaller substages.
