The defendant has the rights to an attorney if they can not afford one the court will make sure that the defendant has counsel and only then will the defendant will have the chance to present their evidence and witnesses to present their side of the case Opening statements allow the prosecutor and the defense attorneys to briefly tell their accounts of the events that have taken place.
