3 2 reflection.docx NUR-300 Regulations and Certifications in Nursing Southern New Hampshire University NUR-300 Scholarly Inquiry Regulations and Certifications in Nursing As nurses, there are ... specific scopes of practice and guidelines that direct our patient care and regulate our actions to optimize patient safety and standardize how to safely take care of a patient. Each state has different standards and regulations that are written out to guide nursing care and be used as a reference point to direct their scope of practice. The first example of a regulating body that standardizes nursing practice on a state by state basis is the Nurse Practice Act (NPA). This is the set of œrules and guidelines that professional caregivers must operate within according to their licensing body (Lockhart 2020). Furthermore, the NPA includes œdefined authority and composition of the board, educational requirements for licensure, standards and scope of nursing practice, definition of the types of licenses and titles, licensure requirements, and a disciplinary process (Lockhart 2020). In short, the NPA is the blanket of principles and criteria for nurses to adhere to in their state in order to provide competent care. Additionally, there is a regulatory body that oversees the NPA and that is the National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN).
