The City College Of New York Mechanical Engineering Department ME461 Lab Experiment 11: Impact Testing of Polymers 12/10/20 Objective: To measure the impact energies, forces and durations o... f various polymers subject to Charpy impact; To study the effect of temperature on the behavior of different polymers under impact loading;To observe the effect of glass transition temperature Tg of one or more of those polymers;To compare impact characteristics of polymers and metals (Experiment 5). Equipment: 1. An Instron-Dynatup impact testing machine and the accompanying Impulse impact testing software 2. A pair of alignment tongs 3. A liquid nitrogen ( LN2 ) soaking tank 4. Acrylic (PMMA), Cast Room Temperature 5. Acrylic (PMMA), Cast Liquid Nitrogen (LN2) 6. Polyethylene, High-Density (HDPE) Room Temperature 7. Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC) Room Temperature 8. Nylon 6,6 (Type 101) Room Temperature Procedure: This machine uses a pendulum of mass M = 27.3 kg (60 lbs), an arm length L = 0.8 m (31.5 inches) and swings at a velocity of Vimp = 5.12 m/s (16.8 ft/sec or 11.45 miles/hour). Some specimens will also be taken from a liquid nitrogen (LN2 ) tank. That means at a cryogenic temperature low than 196°C. Before Tests: The TA/Technician will first fill up a tank with LN2 carefully to ensure no spill-over; then use the alignment tongs to drop a cast PMMA specimen into the LN2 bath to soak the specimens at a cryogenic temperature for later use. 2.
