Objective and Background Leonardo Da Vinci was the first person to discover that sound traveled in waves back in 1500, but one of the reasons why we know so much about sound frequencies is because ... of Galileo. Galileo discovered the pitch in sound, and that the spacing of the grooves on the plate is what makes the pitch higher or lower. Along with that he found out that sound waves are a series of longitudinal or compression waves that move through air or other materials, and are created by the vibration of an object, like the strings on a violin.1 These discoveries plus many more following Galileo would help transform the thinking of sounds and music, and lead to a scientific advancement to help better understand it. Sound waves consist of a series of air pressure variations. A microphone diaphragm records these discrepancies by moving in response to the compression alterations. The diaphragm motion is then converted to an electrical signal. Using a microphone and a computer interface, you can explore the properties of everyday sounds and noises. The purpose of the lab was to calculate the period from the different sound frequency waves emitted by a tone generator, on the computer interface.
