Violence in this context has been underrated which only worsens the stigma that is associated with mental health and mental health patients. Mental health nurses are rarely given the acclamations that they deserve for doing this strenuous task. Adding insult to injury, they are being attacked by the very patients that they provide care for. At the hospital where I work there have been several cases of staff being physically attacked and threatened by patients for this year. Upon hire staff receives one half hour class during orientation where they learn how to deescalate situations with patients, family members and visitors. It does not matter what unit or department they will be assigned to. I dont think this one class adequately prepares the recruits that will be assigned to the psych department because of the high level of risk that exist there. Current Practice At some point during the orientation process new staff attends a class on how to talk to irate patients and how to deescalate a situation with a patient or visitor who is upset with the hope that it will not turn into a crisis. According to Olashore et al, 2018, violence against mental health care providers is disturbing and the rate is significantly high.
