The principal, Dr. Sandy Smith, is in her third year as leader and oversees an administrative team of three assistant principals and three counselors. This team meets once a week on Wednesday as an administrative cabinet to review organizational performance and systems. The main measurement of organizational performance is the State of Texas Assessment of Academic Readiness, or STAAR Test. This exam is given to students in each grade level at Nelson Middle School in a variety of subjects depending on the grade. All grade levels take exams in reading and math, while 7th grade students also take an exam in writing and 8th grade students take additional exams in science and social studies. Based on results from this exam in 2016, the administrative cabinet determined that the scores for special education and English language learners in the area of reading were areas in need of improvement. As a result, STAAR results became the key organizational performance measure for Nelson Middle School.
