Biology > CASE STUDY > Evaluation of Antiseptics and Disinfectants Formal Lab Thompson.docx (All)
Abstract In this approach, different concentrations of commonly used disinfectants (bleach and Lysol) and antiseptics (hydrogen peroxide and isopropyl alcohol) will be observed and documented— th... is will help determine their effectiveness in eliminating a common species of bacterium; E. coli. There will also be another control specimen, allowing the microbiologist the ability to see the influence the E. coli specimen has in microbial bacterium growth. This experiment shows how maintaining a healthy level of hygiene to combat microbes can be necessary to prevent harmful influences. Disinfectants are designed to work with and on inanimate objects, whereas antiseptics work on or in living tissues. This approach will differentiate between disinfectants, antiseptics, sterilizing agents and factors that can affect the action of antimicrobial agents. In conclusion the microbiologist will be able to understand the influence different effective concentrations of specific disinfectants and antiseptics.
