Columbia Public Schools has a code of conduct they expect all their students, including students with disabilities to uphold. Under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, students with disabilities can be disciplined the same way as other students if they break the schools code of conduct. Students within Columbia Public Schools can be suspended for bullying, bringing a weapon to school, fighting or breaking any other part of the school™s code of conduct. A œshort term suspension is anything between 1 day suspended up to 10 days suspended. When a student is suspended for less than 10 days, the school must notify the students™ family in writing why they are being suspended. Families are also entitled to a personal conference regarding the student™s suspension and the conditions for which the student can return back to school. Furthermore, a decision made by the principal can be appealed to the Assistant Superintendent. Schools should make a record of the reasons for the suspension, the results of the conference and the conditions in which the student can return to school. œLong term suspensions are those which exceed more than 10 school days.
