Policy Proposal As nurses, we take an oath, the Nightingale P... ledge, stating that we will not take or knowingly administer any harmful drug and I believe this should include nurses and their unborn babies. I am proposing a policy that all healthcare facilities, in the state of Georgia, that prepare and/or administer cytotoxic drugs, including chemotherapies, follow the Oncology Nurses Society, ONS, and the American Society of Clinical Oncology, ASCO, recommendations pertaining to the administration of cytotoxic drugs. The both organizations recommends that nurses and health care workers who are trying to conceive, pregnant, or breastfeeding not prepare and/or administer cytotoxic drugs due to the increase risk of structural defects in a fetus, adverse reproductive outcomes including fetal loss, miscarriage, or spontaneous abortions, infertility and preterm births. A1. Nursing Profession Policy Issue This is a proposal for a state policy to propose that all healthcare facilities, in the state of Georgia, that prepare and/or administer cytotoxic drugs, prohibit any staff member who is trying to conceive, pregnant, or breastfeeding from preparing and/or administering cytotoxic drugs. The policy proposal will be examined from the Top-Down Approach and the Bottom-Up Approach.
