However, it been observed that our surgical patients are experiencing readmissions related to surgical site infections (SSIs). “SSIs occur in 2% to 4% of all patients undergoing inpatient surgical procedure. Although most infections are treatable with antibiotics, SSIs remain a significant cause of morbidity and mortality after surgery . . . and approximately 3% of patients who contract an SSI will die as a consequence” (Patient Safety Network, 2019). This is not an acceptable outcome and means that we are not meeting our standards of care. Therefore, through the interdisciplinary teamwork of the Neurology Unit, Pre-Op, and Surgical Unit we will be implanting new evidence base practices to help reduce the number of SSIs and in return will be reducing the number of readmissions occurring within our agency. We will be implementing new education geared towards the staff and to surgical patients as well as implementing new evidence based practiced protocols for surgical patients. The education will include ways to reduce surgical infection during the preoperative stage, recovery stage, and postoperative stage according to information obtained from The World Health Organizations evidence-based global guidelines on prevention of SSI.
