APPLICATION OF THEORY: Empowerment and Staff Retention Nursing staff retention is substantial issue that continues to plague healthcare organizations at an alarming rate. Not only does it threaten t... he organizational infrastructure but it also continues to come up in nursing literature and proves to be an important topic for nurse leaders/managers (Spence Laschinger, Leiter, Day, & Gilin, 2009). Patient acuity is on the rise, and appropriate staff is declining. Primary care nurses are becoming frustrated because of the unresponsiveness of their organizations. Research shows that specific organizational design coupled with nursing technology help improve retention of staff nurses. (Duffield, Roche, Blay, & Stasa, 2011; Spence Laschinger et al., 2009). According to Cypress (2015), nursing theory is integral to the development of a professional discipline. Unless nursing defines itself through unique knowledge and science, it will not be considered a distinct discipline. Therefore, the field of nursing must persist in the work of knowledge development and refinement to assist in the delivery of appropriate and safe care for all individuals (Cypress, 2015). Nursing theory cultivates the development and expansion of nursing literature and education. It also is employed to solves problems that arise in nursing practice and cultivates the progression of advanced practice (McCrae, 2012).
