While there are safeguards in place to reduce medication error from occurring such as barcode scanning, two nurse checks and the 8 patient rights, the issue is still prevalent in healthcare. As a nursing student I observed senior nurses during my clinical rotations to learn how to care for patients safely and efficiently. During my observations I noted various nursing styles and methods for saving time. One task that absorbed a significant part of the shift was med pass. While my instructors reinforced patient safety, pulling medications for one patient at a time and the importance of patient education. The senior nurses showed us shortcuts to make life easier. They would pull all of their patients medications and necessary tools for administration and separate them in different pockets, baggies or cups none of which were labeled then they would pass the medication without educating the patients what they were doing and would scan them and mark as administered before the patient could even swallow them. While I had not witnessed an actual medication error occur I definitely saw the potential for one and learned what I wasnt going to do in my own nursing practice.
