In the short stories “Recitatif” by Toni Morrison and Alice Walker’s “Everyday Use”, both possess a character that undergoes a transformation of identity, ascribable to race and class. In ... “Recitatif” by Toni Morrison, the detriment of Roberta’s identity is class and race. This is explored through the use of parallelism between herself and her friend, Twyla and highlights their progressing differences as they grow older. Similarly, in Alice Walker’s “Everyday Use”, the narrator’s daughter, Dee’s identity is tarnished by her newfound success and education. In both instances, the initial parallelism between the characters and their loved ones deteriorates along with their identities as their lives progress, while the identity of their loved ones remains the same and acts as a kind of control.
