C489 task 1.docx (1) Organizational Systems and Quality Leadership Task 1 Western Governors University A.Understanding of Nursing Quality Indicators From what I have learned being a nurse, ... nursing quality indicators are used in everyday nursing. They are indicators that reflect the structure, processes and the outcomes of nursing care as a whole. Each nurse should be looking for ways to help prevent injuries, illness and help maintain a safe environment. We as nurses take these steps and form interventions to help our patients with the best outcomes. In this scenario, the first few things that stand out to me are that Mr. J is 72 years old, he has a history of dementia, he fell and broke his hip and he is taking pain medication. After further reading I notice he is in restraints and has the start of a pressure ulcer. All of these things listed, and others are reasons why nursing quality indicators are put into place. In this scenario alone there are numerous indicators that could be prevented if the correct quality and safety measures were implemented by the nursing staff. One thing that stood out to me most is the fact that Mr. J has the beginning of a pressure ulcer. He has broken his hip and has limited mobility and is in restraints which limits his mobility even more. He is laying directly on his back and a pressure ulcer is forming.
