Understanding of Nursing Quali... ty Indicators Nursing sensitive indicators/initiatives (NSIs) are specific outcome indicators developed to increase quality patient-centered care. Registered nurses (RNs) are demonstrating the value of their role and making significant differences in patient care in treating vulnerable populations, care management, and finding unique ways to benchmark quality in care, making measurable differences in patient care. (Battaglia, Morin, Nelson, Start, & Sullivan, 2017) In the case of Mr. J., NSIs could have guided staff in the areas of preventing falls, preventing or reducing the possibilities of pressure injuries, the use of restraints, and education in the practice of culturally sensitive care and communication with patients and family. According to Montalvo et al., 2007, the National Database of Nursing Quality Indicators (NDNQI), these standards are among the National Quality Forum (NQF) national standards that evaluate nursing-sensitive care. Appropriate nursing education about the NSIs is essential in this scenario to help prevent negative patient outcomes from the use of restraints, the development of hospital-acquired pressure injuries, and education about culturally sensitive care to improve the patient experience.
