When an error is made regarding medication administration, there are countless potential outcomes, up to and including death. With such high risk, it is imperative that medication administration be of top priority to all staff to not only ensure that harm does not come to a patient due to a medication error, but also to ensure that the medication has the intended effect on the patient. The application of technology in nursing is essential to reducing medication errors by means of implementing electronic medication administration records, barcode scanning technology, and automated dispensing cabinets (Bittinger, 2020). I am interested in this topic due to a personal experience with a medication administration error and my realization that technology would have prevented the error if I had been using it correctly. Several months ago, while giving multiple medications to a patient, I mixed up the dosages of the two medications. While I was to give 10 mg of Decadron and 2 mg of Valium, instead I gave 2 mg of Decadron and 10 mg of Valium.
