The US relationship with Hawaii ✔✔I... n 1893, the Kingdom of Hawaii was overthrown and the Republic of Hawaii was established. A few years later, in 1898, Hawaii became a territory of the United States. Over the next several years the United States would built military bases on the islands including Pearl Harbor. Why were the Hawaiian island viewed as important to the US and other countries? ✔✔it had the finest harbor in the mid-Pacific and was viewed as a strategically valuable as a refueling station for ships and naval base. Hawaii was perfectly located in the Pacific Ocean to set up the naval base to refuel and resupply, and Pearl Harbor being one of the largest and best natural harbors in the Pacific Ocean, made for the perfect fit. The United States wanted to use Hawaii as a platform from which they could have a dominant Military presence in the Pacific. It was whaling, sugar and pineapples that first brought Pearl Harbor to America's attention. Sugar industry its agriculture resources and strategic location in the Pacific U.S. business interests and naval strategists had long coveted the island kingdom. Why did the group over throw the queen? ✔✔The businessmen claimed that they were overthrowing the queen because: • She and the government were corrupt • To make Hawaii a more democratic government • to protect Hawaii from being overthrown by other European countries Who was Queen Liliuokalani? ✔✔• She was the leader of Hawaii in 1890 • She was a Hawaiian Nationalist, who had great pride in Hawaii and put her country first. • She wanted control over the Hawaiian islands, so she took away the powers of the American sugar planters. What is a nationalist? ✔✔a person who has extreme pride in their country. They ALWAYS put their country first. No matter what. What was President Cleveland's view of the Hawaiian Revolution? ✔✔ANTI IMPERIALISM He opposed annexation and with withdrew treaty from the senate when he found out the Hawaiians did not support the revolt. He also called American interference in the Hawaiian revolution "disgraceful". He recommend that the monarchy be restored was rejected by Congress. The House of Representatives voted to oppose the annexation, but Congress did not act to restore the monarchy. Cleveland was an outspoken anti-imperialist and thought Americans had acted shamefully in Hawaii. He withdrew the annexation treaty from the Senate and ordered an investigation into potential wrongdoings. Cleveland aimed to restore Liliuokalani to her throne, but American public sentiment strongly favored annexation. Who ruled the new Republic of Hawaii? ✔✔Sanford Dole, (DOLE PINEAPPLE) who was beginning his pineapple business, declared himself president of the Republic of Hawaii without a popular vote. The new government found the queen guilty of treason and sentenced her to five years of hard labor and a $5,000 fine. ✔✔The Republican Party platform in the presidential election of 1896 called for the annexation of Hawaii. Petitions for a popular vote in Hawaii were ignored. Fearing that he lacked two-thirds support for annexation in the Senate, the new Republican president, William McKinley, called for a joint resolution of Congress (the same way that the United States had acquired Texas). With the country aroused by the Spanish American War and political leaders fearful that the islands might be annexed by Japan, the joint resolution easily passed Congress. Hawaii officially became a U.S. territory in 1900. ✔✔Sugar growers, who dominated the islands' economy, imported thousands of immigrant laborers first from China, then Japan, then Portuguese from Madeira and the Azores, followed by Puerto Ricans, Koreans, and most recently Filipinos. As a result, Hawaii has one of the world's most multicultural populations. ✔✔In 1993, a joined Congressional resolution, signed by President Bill Clinton, apologized for the U.S. role in the overthrow. After a century of American rule, many native Hawaiians remain bitter about how the United States acquired the islands, located 2,500 miles from the West Coast. The purpose of the McKinley Tariff was to protect domestic industries from foreign competition. Its purpose was therefore to discourage the importation of goods from other countries. By putting this "handicap" on imported goods, imported products would become more expensive as compared to those made in America, thereby protecting American manufacturing and industries. The McKinley Tariff was also designed to restrict the importation of wheat and other consumables from Europe and Canada and to place raw sugar on the free (not taxed) list.
