Florida State College at Jacksonville HUM 2020 HUM discussion-REVIEWED BY EXPERTS 2021

Document Content and Description Below

HUM How has the politics of identity (race, class, gender, and sexuality) shapped access to the American Dream in terms of inclusion and exclusion? What personal experiences of such can you relate?... Throughout history the American dream has been either easier or harder to accomplish based on the politics of a person’s identity. The poster child for the American dream has always been the white male as stated in Hochschild’s writings the white male tends to prosper more because of lack of competition. Throughout history women, colored men, the poor, and any sexual orientation other that heterosexual have had a lot more barriers placed in front of them then white heterosexual males have. To achieve inclusion America has according to Jillson’s writings “formally” opened that dream of liberty, equality, and opportunity to a more diverse group of people. While formally the notation of equality of all is a great thought the hurdles that we all face in this race to the American dream is still not all equal. Speaking on the tenets of the American dream racial biased is still present today and can slow people of colors progress towards their goals, the prosperity has shifted where the poor stay poor, the rich get richer, and the middle stay middle, females are still fighting for equality of job wages and to be seen as more than just a flower or princess, and many non-heterosexual people are seen an non virtuous and are still judged for their lifestyle. I am an African-American middle-classed female whom happens to have a name that is characterized as a “white name”. I have received comments from people of many different ethnicities which would be considered microaggressions such as “you talk like a white girl”, “you sound so well educated”, “you are pretty for a black girl”, or “wow, you don’t know who (insert rapper name) is? I’m blacker than you are”. I have been profiled many times and have found that to be a part in my everyday life. I haven’t had many problems getting called for interviews opposed to my husband whose name is Jadaleral (don’t even try to say it because you’re saying it wrong) who finds that to get interviews he must go to the establishment and introduce himself and “get his face out there” so he doesn’t get judged just by his name but by his character and drive as well. What I do find when I go to a job interview is that initial look of surprise when I walk up to my interviewer and they say “you’re Rachel? Or is it (prounounces it) Rah-kel?” and I have to politely say “No it’s Rachel just as it’s spelled.” and then follow up questions about my hair and if my hair is “like that all time?”. I haven’t personally experiences a huge injustice myself, but I haven’t had it easy either, but I strive forward determined not to let the judgements or stereotypes about my race or gender hold me back from my goals. So, my question for you is with all the laws set into place that should promote equal opportunity for all do you think it really does? Please address the readings and learning modules as part of your post. Avoid, phrases such as: "good post," "I think," "to me," "in my opinion," and "I agree." Simply present your argument with supporting material from the course. In your peer response idenity some cultural texts (TV, Movies, Songs, Writings, etc.) that resonsate with what your peer wrote.
