C351.docx Professional Presence and Influence Western Governors University Professional Presence and Influence Introduction As a healthcare professional, we have an understanding of health and ... healing through the advancements in medicine and healthcare.  In order for us to give the best care possible, we must explore and understand ourselves first. In this discussion, I will explore and analyze the internal and external environment that influences my nursing practice. Models of Health and Healing Era I began in the 1860s, this was a time when the focus for medicine was about the physical function of the body.  Health and illness were physical in nature (Koerner, 2011). Physicians would focus on what was mechanically wrong with the patient's body and only treat those problems.  The body was seen purely as mechanical and consisted of parts that worked independently and collectively to maintain function. When there was dysfunction is was generally from disturbance to the physical mechanics of the body.  Physicians then intervened with pharmaceutical or surgical intervention.   Era III brought medicine treatments to the whole person (mind, body, and soul).  This is the newest and most advanced model. It involved the consciousness, “which includes thoughts, emotions, beliefs, attitudes, and meaning” (Koerners, 2011).
