Escape from Spiderhead In “Escape from Spiderhead", George Saunders explores the vital ideas and experiences of humanity to show the contribution of artificial things to real things. The short sto... ry revolves around one man named Jeff. He undergoes extreme physical, emotional, and moral tests at the hands of a test administrator named Abnesti. These tests involve the use of artificial drugs that are created to control human sensations of love. In Escape from Spiderhead , criminals have the opportunity to serve their sentences by opting to be experiment subjects. This takes place in the form of various drugs pumped into their circulation, for which they have to acknowledge. These drugs include being able to make users much more eloquent in their speech, of lowering inhibitions, of creating and removing emotions. The artificial drugs that the subjects were injected with makes them feel intense and real feelings that they had never experienced before. Nevertheless, none of these are real since their minds have just been tricked into believing it is real. This is apparent to the reader and even the subjects. It is not only morally wrong but also uncomfortable. Abnesti is able to take away and infuse traits that define the reality of humanity with the use of artificial drugs. The reader remains uncertain of our humanity considering it can be controlled by artificial chemicals.
