BIOS 255 Week 2 Assignment: Case Study – Heart – With Correct Answers

Document Content and Description Below

BIOS 255 Week 2 Assignment: Case Study – Heart – With Correct Answers What are the four valves found in the heart and where are they located? Give all names for each valve. “Tricus... pid valve: located between the right atrium and the right ventricle. pulmonary semilunar valve: located between the right ventricle and the pulmonary artery. Mitral valve: located between the left atrium and the left ventricle. Aortic semilunar valve: located between the left ventricle and the aorta. (Tortora, 2017)” 1. What is a mitral valve prolapse and what causes this in Marfan's syndrome specifically? This is also called MVP and also known as a click murmur syndrome and Barlow’s syndrome, and it’s a condition where there is insufficiency within one or both flaps of the mitral valve have difficulties closing during ventricular contraction. This is considered a hereditary condition where 1/40 of people have it. Most patients with this syndrome with proper care do live a relatively normal life expectancy. (Bowen & Connolly, 2014). The way Marfan’s syndrome affects the heart and causes MVP is by making defective tissues caused by mutations in a gene called FBN1, that causes less tissue elasticity (Bowen & Connolly, 2014). 2. What happens to blood flow (specifically) with a mitral valve prolapse (where would the blood back up to and why)? The blood backs up into the left atrium causing mitral valve regurgitation. If the valves can’t open properly then the left ventricle cannot fill up accordingly causing mitral valve stenosis. 3. If a person were to have a prolapse of the tricuspid valve, what specifically would happen to the flow of blood in that case? Blood leaks back from the right ventricle to the right atrium. 4. Do you think Janet will ever play basketball again? Why or why not? I believe Janet can no longer play for the school but can socially play, because she already has experience with cardiac arrest, making it likely to happen again under extreme physical activity (Pelliccia et al., 2008). I came up with that opinion after going over the 36th Bethesda conference where a group of medical professionals went over the cardiac issues affecting athletes and they reasons to fully stop sports.
